“It is a step at a time, a small little change bit by bit, and suddenly standing in our mirror is that person we wondered if we would ever see again. “
The beginning of my story is like many, an obese child, losing and gaining always a bit more each time followed by self hatred and despair. I gave up for years and just maintained my fat. Then I started gaining and getting scared about my health. Out of desperation I started looking into gastric bypass surgery. I was denied at first, of course, and then accepted finally after 2 years of struggle, 2 sets of pre-op tests and 2 psych evaluations. As I was setting the final appointment for surgery (I even got the surgeon I wanted) they asked me for a copy of my new insurance card. I sent them a copy and at the 11th hour I was told they couldn’t go through with it as my new insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery. The company I worked for went self insured, there was some dishonesty with the insurance company about what plan we really had. With no one to help me, I fought the insurance company, consulted an attorney and was a monster to work with I was so angry and devastated.
Looking back I feel blessed and almost divinely guided. I began searching options and discovered Dr. Kuri. I said to myself “this is my life and no one is going to stop me from getting well!”
I came to Mexico alone, it seemed I need to make this journey on my own it was so deeply personal for me. I guess I didn’t want to share or was afraid someone or something would get in my way.
Now, 2 ½ years later I have lost 123lbs., wear a size 8, take no more medications and have my health and life back. I realized this is not a journey you can see going forward because none of us are sure we will reach our destination after so many failures but rather a journey that looking back from where we started we can see how far we have come. It is a step at a time, a small little change bit by bit and suddenly standing in our mirror is that person we wondered if we would ever see again. An voila! There we are.
Who is the magician that cast this spell? A kind, brilliant, skilled and caring doctor named Kuri (let’s not forget handsome) that said “I will give you the tool, you must do the work.” In my willingness to follow the doctor and do the work I found myself. I am so thankful that the obstacles placed in my path led me to the skilled hands of this wonderful Doctor.
